Please find enclosed check for two boxes of Hi-Proteen tablets. With Hi-Proteen and the power system of training, I keep getting stronger and stronger. I have recently increased my squat to an easy 580, at a bodyweight of 225. Have recently dead lifted 675. I am not satisfied with my Olympic lifts, although I now press 280, snatch 245, and clean. and jerk 325. But I figure that if I continue with Hi-Proteen and the power exercises as I intend doing, I will surely increase. Ken Stoller Buffalo, N. Y.

A panel of experts at the Academy of General Practice convention stressed the need for more exercise. Leading football coaches, like "Pappy" Waldorf of the Univ. of Calif., pointed out that modern living has made softies of even college athletes and contributes to the frequency of athletic injuries.... Barbells for body building are as outdated as the horse and buggy for transportation, declares a peddler of food concentrates. Here's a classic illustration of hokum. There are a number of aspects of life, like character and friendship, which can not be purchased like groceries. The type of superman physique that progressive weight training is producing in abundance can not be obtained through any hocus-pocus.
DID YOU KNOW?-Jackie MacDonald, the athletic beauty star from Toronto, was featured in a two-page spread in the sports press. Use of weights was featured in her quest for Olympic honors in the shot put at the '56 Games. BEHIND THE SCENES (Continued from page 26)
in an arm, wouldn't it?
A few days ago, Johnny McWilliams dropped into the Apollo Health Studio for a bit of a workout, and since I hadn't seen him since before I went to Florida, I grabbed the advanced student's tape measure and went to work. Johnny, as most of you know, has the most goshawful big arms on record-and they have at times gone considerably over 20 inches around the biceps. This time he was not in strenuous training and the tape read 191⁄2 inches in the usual position cold. Then he said. "try measuring them in the straight position." He held the arm straight down, so that the triceps bulked up somewhat.
inches.
The tape read 192
This is the first arm on record, to our knowledge at least, to measure as much straight as it does bent and fully flexed. You might try this on

your arm and see how far you have to go to get the utmost in arm development.
Another theory was confirmed by McWilliams: His chest grows along with his arms-or perhaps it might be better to say that his arms keep pace with his chest. The chest measure was 54 inches, his bodyweight was down to 208 lbs. He was in the midst of an experiment in reducing, for his weight often goes 235 lbs. The fact that his arms were still only a shade under 20 inches, and his chest 54 at this low bodyweight proves something or other completely incomprehensible to most physical authorities. The experts in this field have maintained that it is entirely impossible to get arms and chest up to measures like this with. a small bone structure. Mac's wrists were for a long time only 7 inches, and even now go under 72.
Incidentally, while speaking of Johnny, he is the first muscleman to appear in a Saturday Evening Post advertisement. In the April 9 issue, page 93, you can see the Mac arm working on a shock absorber. The text has to do with a new Hydro-Muscle Ride Control device manufactured by the Briggs Shock Absorber Company. So a new field is open to musclemen who wish to turn biceps into money.
AT the recent Ohio-West Virginia District YMCA WL Championships we ran into a number of old Ohio friends, including Len Fauver, once National Jr. Champ; Art Dunzweiler, the Dayton lifting enthusiast; Eldon Ward of the Spring St. Y in Columbus, who started his lifting just as we finished ours some dozen years ago; Jack Hughes of Akron, former National Champ in the 123-lb. class; the Kusmits brothers of Akron, and Chuck Neitling of Toledo, perennial Ohio Heavy Champ, who also started lifting quite a while back. At this competition, Akron Y carried away the team trophy for the third time, and Jack Hughes continued to improve after many years in the game by setting a 560 total for a new Y record in the 123-lb. class. Neitling pressed 270 in the heavy class, and set a new total record with 835 lbs. He also busted the platform, as is customary, so that when Pete George came on to attempt a world record of 375 lbs. in the clean and jerk, he only had a corner of the platform about the size of a pocket handkerchief to lift upon. Pete made three very close attempts at 375. Dick Greenawalt also performed in the C & J at 132 bodyweight, and succeeded easily with 280, and just missed the jerk after cleaning 290 three times. He has (Continued on page 50)
